March 25, 2013 (BOR) - Security officials in South Sudan's Jonglei state said Monday that criminals broke into the compound of telecoms operator, MTN in Bor and looted 18,000 South Sudanese Pounds after poisoning the guards on Sunday night.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials said a group of criminals entered the MTN compound and sprayed the night time security guard with an unknown poisonous substance.

Although many cases of theft and robbery occur in Bor, a CID officer told Sudan Tribune, this is first time for drugs to be used in this way.

Major Osman Fulus Elnur said his office took the victim to hospital “to find out exactly which kind of drug was used”, adding that those responsible “must be apprehended”.

The manager of the MTN office in Jonglei state, Nyok Michael Arem said unknown criminals broke into their compound.

“They broke [into] our store where we keep our things, maybe after they have poisoned the guard and took the amount of 18,000 South Sudanese pounds together with office stationery,” Nyok Michael told the press on Saturday.

MTN officials said it was not the first time their compound was attacked or looted.

“It is not the first time the MTN station in Bor was broken into. In 2009, criminals attempted to break into the station compound, but failed to steal anything,” he said.

The security guard, who is being treated at Bor hospital has not yet spoken about the incident.
